GERE WINERY

The Gere family’s grape growing and wine production tradition goes back 10 generations.  These traditions were adversely impacted by the government structure installed after World War II.  Attila, who was Hungary’s Winemaker of the Year in 1994, began making wine in 1978, which commercial efforts beginning in 1991. After gaining a vineyard on the slopes of the Csillagvölgy hill, the winery went on to acquire land on some of the region’s prized lands, the Kopár, Konkoly, and Ördögárok slopes. The winery owns 50 hectares (124 acres), with 33 hectares (82 acres) producing cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot, kékfrankos, and portugieser.  

The Gere guesthouse was the first in the wine district that offered lodging to those wishing to spend a few days with the reds and whites of this wonderful area. The guesthouse has modern facilities including a Mediterranean-style courtyard terrace, bathhouse with sauna and Jacuzzi.  Each room features a private bathroom, satellit
e TV, air-conditioning, and direct dial phone.


GERE WINES:

Solus Merlot.  This wine is 100% Merlot, produced only in
excellent years,  exclusively from fruit grown in the Kopár

vineyard, and matured 16 months in new oak barrique barrels.
This is a wine of considerable character and concentration,
ruby red in color with alluring aromas and a harmonious long
lasting finish. Capable of long cellaring. Only 540 cases are made,
with each bottle numbered.

Kopar Cuvee.   The
winery's flagship wine, it is a classic
Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc,
and Merlot. This wine is made only in the finest years with the hand-selected grapes from the Kopár, Csillagvölgy, and Konkoly vineyards. It has a dark ruby color, and an aroma that is d
iscrete but spicy, and very persistent with notes of chestnut, Italian cappuccino, and a range of fruits. It has a round palate with a robust texture.  This wine is aged 20 months in barrique barrels, and is capable of a long bottle life in the cellar.  5000 cases made.

Cabernet Franc Selection.  This grape sems to have found a spiritual home in
Hungary, and this amazing wine is handcrafted in partnership with Franz Weninger, one of Austria’s finest winemakers. A deep ruby color, matched by an intense, rich and long-lasting bouquet, this wine shows an exuberant and sweet spicy aroma and taste. It spends eighteen months in new barrique barrels.  Full of youthful tannins that can be matured, will show real beauty after 2-3 years in bottle. 840 cases made.

Cabernet Sauvignon Barrique.  An exceptional example of this grape‘s capability, its deep ruby color is permeated with shades of violet. Exuberant aromas of blackberry, currant, wild berries, with a note of wood are present in this wine. Firm, though delicate, tannins and sweet flavors characterize the wine. Barrique-aged for eighteen months, it has a complex build, and a persistent finish.  4,600 cases made.

Kékfrankos Prestige A rich, fiery, masculine wine is typical in this interpretation of the Kékfrankos grape.  Dark red in color, with an elegant aroma full of fruit and spice notes. It has a breezy, lasting taste on the palate. This wine was aged 18 months in new barrique barrels.  585 cases made.

Cuvée Phoenix.  A fascinating blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Kékfrankos, the wine is a deep red color, and its bouquet embraces blackberry and plum notes with a smoky palate.  It feels smooth in the mouth with a long-lasting finish, supported by an elegant tannin structure.  This wine is aged 16 months in small and large barrels.  3,300 cases made.
